Frequently Asked Questions

What types of crops can agriculture drones spray?

Agriculture drones can spray a wide variety of crops, including row crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat, as well as specialty crops such as fruits, vegetables, orchards and vineyards. They’re especially effective for crops that are difficult to reach with traditional equipment, including areas near ditches, canals, and power lines. Agricultural drones can apply treatments during wet ground conditions when concerns of soil compaction from heavy ground rigs arise saving time and money. Using drones allows for precise application of fungicides, pesticides, herbicides and other crop treatments, reducing waste and improving overall crop health.

Do I need an FAA license to fly an agriculture drone?

Yes. In the U.S., anyone operating a drone for commercial purposes — including agriculture drones — must hold a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certification ensures operators understand safe flight practices, airspace regulations, and proper drone operation. All Central UAS Technologies aircrafts are also on the approved Section 44807 list, which allows a remote pilot to operate a drone that weighs at least 55 lbs or carries hazardous materials (like agricultural spray).

In addition, operators need to obtain FAA Part 137 certification, which governs the use of aircraft, including drones, to dispense or spray substances.

Please note, each state has its own requirements to fly a drone and dispense chemicals. Please be sure to check your state’s aerials applicators requirements.

What training is required to operate agricultural drones?

Proper training is essential for safe and effective drone farming. Training typically includes:

  • Hands-on flight instruction
  • Learning to safely operate UAV agriculture systems in various environments
  • Understanding crop spraying techniques and proper application rates
  • Using agriculture drone software for flight planning and field analysis
  • FAA Part 107 is your first step in drone training

Central UAS Technologies provides support and training resources to help your team get up to speed quickly and operate drones safely and efficiently.

What software do I need for operating agriculture drones?

Agriculture drones are most effective when paired with precision agriculture software or agriculture drone software. This software allows you to plan flights, analyze field data, and optimize spraying operations. Features include:

  • Automated flight planning and field mapping
  • Tracking of pesticide, fungicide and herbicide applications
  • Data integration for improved crop management

Using the right drone farming software ensures maximum efficiency, accuracy, and ROI from your UAV agriculture investment.
